One of the solutions is to actually teach them to login using an SSH
client (the department/technion used to have a nice ssh client with
GUI), when some of the clients have also a GUI to transfer files. This
solves the majority of the format issues.

Solution 1: Install Ubuntu 8.10 (I think the OpenOffice is newer, and
thus, has better import procedures).
Solution 2: Tell them to install OpenOffice at home as well.
Solution 3: Explain to them that a good presentation is not about
animation but about content.

I'm very tempted to answer this: "So install Linux at home as well".
But this won't get us nowhere.
I have the feeling that the students were not motivated enough before
the transition (a bit of motivation would have helped): New
technologies are important, technologies would change, heck, even MS
changes stuff.

that sounds weird. My only guess is that quota issue caused that.

If you run the command from inside a shell script, you are expected to
get a fprintf(stderr,"weird message concerning quota"). There is
indeed some problems in GUI error handling.

If I read this correctly, you guys still send them MS office
documents. Convert them to RTF before hand.

Should be by default.

B. That means that they do not save every X minutes as they should.

That sounds weird. Even SMB has access control.

That sounds an SMB misconfiguration.
And they should learn ssh -X and the concept of Xwindows (which is very tricky)
