CGI Scripts And HTML Forms
- Quite often, when we wish to write a simple GUI for a program, using
a simple HTML interface (AKA "web-based GUI") could serve as quick method.
- HTML is a very simple language - if one sticks to functional pages, rather
then to bells and whistles. Writing HTML forms is also quite simple.
- An HTML form could be used to insert all options for running a program.
The program itself will be spawned by a CGI script running under a web
server.
- Since a CGI program runs in a non-interactive manner, it is useful either
for launching a short (= fast) program, or launching a long job at the
background, and just stating the job was started, possibly giving the
process number. A slightly more complicated 'job management' system could
be developed on top of that.
