Unix Market Fragmentation Other companies have decided to enter the Unix market, and licensed the system sources from either AT&T or Berkeley University, to save in development time. Sun licensed BSD to create SunOs. HP licensed SysV to create HP/UX. IBM created AIX, which Unix purists claimed to be a non-Unix system due to its internal implementation. The original Unix trademark switched hands, until it landed with SCO with their Unixware system.
